Express entry is an online selection system designed to select skilled workers interested and wish to immigrate to Canada.

Express Entry immigration system is known to be the fastest selection system of Canadian Immigration as individuals and families around the world can immigrate to Canada within just a few months. First introduced in 2015, Express Entry becomes the main path of the skilled workers to immigrate to Canada and one of the most popular immigration systems globally.

Express Entry is not an immigration program in itself, but rather a system used by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to select candidates for immigration to Canada. Through this system, IRCC manages and processes applications received through three of Canada’s federal economic immigration programs for skilled workers.

Express Entry ranks all eligible candidates against one another and then inviting the best ranking candidates to apply for Canadian Permanent Status on the basis of their age, education, language proficiency, work experience and other adaptability factors.

How Express Entry Canada Works?

Determine Your Eligibility

Potential applicants seeking to immigrate to Canada will need to be eligible under one of Canada’s Federal Economic Immigration programs to enter express entry pool. Consequently, the first step to be taken should be to determine your eligibility for one of these programs.

• Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW)
• Federal Skilled Trades Program (FST)
• Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

The Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) are aligned with Express Entry, but the candidates must be eligible under one of the above mentioned three federal programs in order to enter the Express Entry pool.

Create Express Entry Profile

Candidates who meet the criteria of one of the above mentioned Federal Economic Immigration program submit an online Express Entry profile to the pool of candidates. The Express Entry profile acts as an Expression of Interest (EOI). They need to provide information about their skills, work experience, language ability, education and other personal information to submit an online Express Entry profile. Eligible candidates will automatically receive a score based on their profile through the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) and will be ranked against the other candidates in the pool. The Comprehensive Ranking System ranks eligible candidates out of 1,200 points for immigration to Canada through the Express Entry system. The CRS score is used as a cut-off point in Express Entry draws.

Candidates can improve their rank with a valid job offer from a Canadian employer or a provincial nomination. If a candidate does not have a valid job offer, he or she may register with Canada’s Job Bank. However, registering in the Job Bank May improve a candidate’s visibility to Canadian employers. Candidate can receive additional points if they got a valid job offer from a Canadian employer, or if they’ve receive a provincial nomination

The higher a candidate’s CRS score, the higher the likelihood they will receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA).

Received an Invitation To Apply (ITA)

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) conduct Express Entry draws at regular intervals (usually every two weeks). The highest-ranked candidates and those with valid job offers or provincial nominations are then invited to apply for Canadian permanent residence. If a candidate is not invited, their profile will expire after 12 months, after which point they may submit a new profile. Visit this page for details of the latest Express Entry draws.

After receiving the ITA, the candidate has 60 days to submit an electronic application for permanent resident. The processing time of applications is six months after the date of submission. Candidates must ensure that they complete all the necessary forms and submit documents along with the processing fees within this timeframe. On completion of this process, the successful candidate and their dependents (spouse and children) will land in Canada as permanent residents.

What you need before creating Express Entry Profile?

In order to submit your Express Entry profile, you will require three main documents which should be ready on your first step:

1. Language Test Report: All Express Entry candidates must show proficiency in either English or French. You require official test scores from an approved language test in order to submit your profile. The minimum required score varies between the three Express Entry-aligned programs(Federal Economic Immigration programs).
   If you want to prove your proficiency in English, your options are the IELTS General Training exam or the CELPIP General exam. If you want to prove your proficiency in French, your options are the TEF exam or the TCF exam.
2. Educational Credentials Assessment (ECA): The ECA is an evaluation of non-Canadian education by Canadian standards which is a mandatory requirement for the Federal Skilled Worker Class. It is also recommended that FSTC and CEC candidates also get an ECA report as education is an important component of the CRS score. ECA is not required for foreign education, not for educational programs completed in Canada.
3. Passport: In order to submit an Express Entry profile, you must need a valid passport which is mandatory.

Once you have these three documents, you will be able to create your Express Entry profile.

How many funds need to show?

All the applicants of Express entry which includes FSWC and FSTC program must show proof that they have enough money to support themselves and their family members during their settlement in Canada. Whereas applicants with a valid job offer in Canada and CEC applicants do not need to show settlement funds.

Please note that these funds must be under your name (or your spouse’s or common-law partner’s name) and must be liquid and readily accessible. IRCC will ask you to submit several months of documentation showing the funds. Funds cannot be borrowed from someone else, or the application will risk being refused.
